Shokugeki No Soma: A Review

I will try and make this review rather brief, there will be minor spoilers throughout, but nothing that can ruin the show. Shokugeki no Souma is in essence a conflict shounen, but without actual physical fighting it is about food. That may sound bizarre, but that is actually what it is, we’ve got a cocky lead character who’s determined to be the finest or become more powerful, and to do thus he to fight many foes and scale the ranks. Now, for an anime about food it might looks weird to have this style of storytelling, but it really works for this series and makes for a fun to watch show. I had a lot of fun watching this show, but of course I ‘ve some issues. Primarily, though I enjoy our main character I believe hes a little TOO good at everything. What I mean by that is he starts off the show very good, and with the exceptions of a few times he’s consistently on top. Consequently, he doesn’t develop much over the show and there’s little to no relatability, he’s no defects, except for maybe his cockiness. Also in the beginning there is extremely significant foreshadowing that romance will likely be introduced, and it is debatable that this aspect was investigated a bit, but really that went nowhere. Apart from that it was very entertaining to see and I enjoyed seeing the reactions of individuals when tasting delectable food.

Artwork 8/10- It was nicely animated and I did not see any drops in quality, the fan service was a bit over the top sometimes, and even though I loved it 😉 I still thought it was a bit too much at times.

Sound 7/10- Again, it was great, but I can’t think of any tune that sticks out, except possibly the first op.

Character 9/10- The characters are where I got most of my enjoyment from the show, they were interesting to watch, although most were under-developed.
